David Archuleta's Opinion About "American Idol's" New Judge Kara DioGuardi

Is she more like Simon? Or more like Paula?
Just because Idol’s new judge, Kara DioGuardi, co-wrote Kylie Minogue’s “Spinning Around” with Paula Abdul, doesn’t mean she’s as easy-going as the veteran judge. According to American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, the newest judge on the show is “a tough person” and “a bit more picky than Paula.”
But that doesn’t necessarily make her a grouch like Simon. “She has a lot of spunk,” Archuleta said Monday before a performance at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe. “She’s not afraid to tell it like it is and be herself.”
“I may say things that are negative,” DioGuardi told PEOPLE recently. “But I always try to do it with some heart and some understanding of what it’s like to be on the other side of the table.”
According to Archuleta, who collaborated with DioGuardi on his self-titled debut album and his hit single “Crush,” the fourth judge will be an interesting element added to the panel. “I’m excited about the new judge because I think Kara’s grounded,” Archuleta said. “She’s an amazing singer, an amazing songwriter.”
DioGuardi has worked with other former Idol contestants including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Katharine McPhee on their post-show endeavors. Now, America will see what she can do with the newest crop of Idol wannabes. The new season of American Idol airs Tuesday on FOX (8 p.m. ET).

Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" crossed the finish line first at the weekend box office in North America on Sunday, setting a new record for the busy 78-year-old actor and director.
The suburban drama, in which Eastwood plays a grumpy old man who takes on Latino gang members "Dirty Harry"-style, earned an estimated $29 million in the three days since it opened nationally on Friday, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said.
Eastwood's previous best weekend was with "Space Cowboys," which earned $18 million in 2000. His most recent directing effort, "Changeling," earned $9.4 million during its first weekend of national release. "Gran Torino" has grossed $40.1 million since opening in limited release last month.
Three new movies, all playing mostly to women, entered the top 10 with better-than-expected results. "Bride Wars," starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, opened at No. 2 with $21.5 million, followed by the supernatural thriller "The Unborn," at No. 3 with $21.1 million.
The faith-themed drama "Not Easily Broken," based on a book by noted preacher T.D. Jakes, debuted at No. 9 with $5.6 million. It played in just 724 theaters, while the other movies in the top 10 averaged about 2,950 theaters each.
After two weekends at No. 1, "Marley & Me" fell to No. 4 with $11.4 million. The canine saga, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, has earned $123.7 million to date.
Even though business in the East and Midwest was affected by bad weather, overall sales rose for the third consecutive weekend, up 14 percent to $148 million from the year-ago period, according to tracking firm Media by Numbers.Eastwood's box office victory is good timing, coming a day before Oscar voters' nominations ballots are due. "Gran Torino" has largely been ignored by other awards groups, but its higher profile could help it score with last-minute voters.
Another potential influence on Oscar voters is the Golden Globe Awards, which will kick off later on Sunday in Beverly Hills at 8 p.m. EST/0100 GMT. The top Globe contenders are "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Doubt" and "Frost/Nixon," with five nominations each. "Gran Torino" received one, for original song.
As it did with Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby," Warner Bros. opened "Gran Torino" in limited release to build word of mouth. The plan seems to be working, with Eastwood's older fan base now joined by younger moviegoers, the Time Warner Inc owned studio said.
"Bride Wars," in which Hathaway and Hudson play dueling Bridezillas, cost a modest $30 million to produce, said 20th Century Fox. The News Corp NWSa.N unit also distributed "Marley & Me."
"The Unborn" was even cheaper, at $16 million, distributor Universal Pictures said. The General Electric Co unit, which had been hoping for a $12 million opening, released the film on behalf of closely held producer Relativity Media.
"Not Easily Broken," released by TriStar Pictures cost just $5 million, a studio spokesman said. While the Sony Corp unit did not poll moviegoers by ethnicity, anecdotal evidence suggested that it played mostly to a black audience.
"Benjamin Button," the only leading Globe contender in the top 10, fell two places to No. 5 with $9.5 million. The total for the Brad Pitt vehicle rose to $94.3 million after three weekends. It was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

The "No Show"

Actor John Travolta will not be attending this year’s Golden Globe awards after the tragic death of his teen son learlier this month.
Travolta was scheduled to appear at the show in support of his last movie “Bolt,” nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for his duet with Miley Cyrus entitled “Thought I Lost You.”
The actor’s son Jett Travolta, 16, suffered a seizure at the family’s vacation home in the Bahamas. His body was discovered unconscious on the morning of January 2. He was rushed to the hospital, but died a short time later. The teen’s body was cremated last Monday and his ashes were flown to the U.S. The family held a memorial service Thursday.
Travolta’s rep Samantha Mast told E! News that the star would not attend the Sunday awards show.

Josh Duhamel and Fergie Wed

The Dutchess is a bride. Her manager says Fergie and Josh Duhamel have been married.
Manager William Derella said by e-mail that the 33-year-old "Fergalicious" singer-actress, whose real name is Stacy Ferguson, and the 36-year-old "Transformers" actor were married Saturday at the Church Estates Vineyards in Malibu.
The pair had been dating since 2004 and were engaged in 2007.
The Black Eyed Peas singer launched her solo career in 2006 with the hit album "The Dutchess" — the title is a misspelled variation of the title formerly held by Sarah "Fergie" Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

Tinsletowns Preperation for The Golden Globe Awards

The Golden Globe Awards, dubbed Hollywood's biggest party, get rolling on Sunday with a who's who of the celebrity world turning out for the annual film and television honors that last year were derailed by a screenwriters' strike during Tinseltown's Oscar season.
But 2009's Golden Globes will go on as planned with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie expected in the red carpet fashion parade outside the widely watched awards ceremony.
Tension couldn't be higher, industry pundits say, because many of the key award races for best films, actors and actresses are too close to call.
"There's no absolute shoo-in at the Globes this year, not even Heath Ledger," said Tom O'Neil of the Los Angeles Times award-watching site, TheEnvelope.com.
Ledger, who portrayed the villainous Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight," died last year of an accidental prescription drug overdose. He is nominated for best supporting actor.
The Golden Globe Awards, which are voted upon by some 90 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, are one of the most-watched Hollywood awards shows. Many winners will go on to compete for February's Oscars, the world's top film honors from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Last year, the screenwriters' strike caused the HFPA to transform the glitzy, black-tie event into a boring news conference, and only 5.8 million television viewers tuned-in.
That figure is far less than the U.S. TV audience of 20 million that watched the year before, which does not include the millions more around the world who see taped repeats.GLAMOUR RETURNS
This year, audiences should expect a return to glamour and a close race for the HFPA's top award, best dramatic film.
Pundits give "Slumdog Millionaire," about a young Indian man competing for love and money on a TV game show, the best shot of beating "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," an epic love story starring Pitt as a man who ages backward.
But the experts also caution to not ignore "Frost/Nixon," which recounts interviews of disgraced former U.S. president Richard Nixon by British TV host David Frost. The other two nominees are dramas "The Reader" and "Revolutionary Road."
In two other major races -- best dramatic actor and actress -- the battles are too close to call.
Among actresses, Anne Hathaway as a recovering drug addict in "Rachel Getting Married," will see her key competition from Meryl Streep playing a nun who suspects child sex abuse in her Catholic school in "Doubt."
But they face strong challenges by Angelina Jolie in "The Changeling," Kate Winslet for "Revolutionary Road" and Kristen Scott Thomas for French film, "I've Loved You So Long."
The dramatic actor race pits veteran Frank Langella playing the former president in "Frost/Nixon" against Sean Penn as slain gay activist Harvey Milk in "Milk," Pitt in "Benjamin Button," comeback kid Mickey Rourke for "The Wrestler" and DiCaprio as a frustrated husband in "Revolutionary Road."
Finally, some viewers won't even watch the awards so much as the red carpet fashion, and despite the dour U.S. economy that has left many Americans saving their pennies, Hollywood is expected to arrive in style at the Golden Globes."During times like this, America turns to celebrities to take them away from that. It's really the glamour of Hollywood that people want to see," said style expert Michael O'Connor.
